    What creates the stunning, gorgeous, glorious colors displayed in the mantle of giant clams?

    a. the reflection of light from the refractive cells in the mantle tissue.

    b. a tiny elf with a great paint brush and a wild imagination.

    c. the pigments in the chromatophores of the mantle.

    d. the color of the symbiotic algae in the mantle tissue.

    Ok I have not looked at the answer to this so I am going to go out on a limb. I am going to pick B! OK well may not. I think it could be C.

    Since elfs make good keebler cookies, I don't think they are good painters!!! going to go with C also

    And You are correct! The answer is D.

    Like corals, giant clams maintain symbiotic algae, zooxanthellae, within their mantle tissue, and it is these algae that provide the color in the clam's mantle . Oh, yeah, don't tell anyone if you see the elf.
